Weekend Getaway Vail, Colorado
When you have a 3 day weekend, what do you do? Search for a mini weekend to Vail, Colorado. I have been wanting to visit Colorado for awhile and thought this was the perfect opportunity to visit Vail. This short trip consisted of beautiful scenic stops, charming boutique shopping, and an incredible stay at Sonnenalp Hotel.
From our drive from Denver to Vail, we made a quick stop in the cute little town, Breckenridge. We did the scenic Boreas Pass Road for some epic views and it did not disappoint!
Right when you take the drive up, you will see this incredible view overlooking the mountains.
We continued to drive for an additional 15-20 minutes but the views were mostly of the green trees so we turned around. Definitely a great quick detour before arriving in Vail! Make sure to stop at Mary’s Mountain cookies for a yummy treat or for some authentic cajun at The Lost Cajun. Now we were en route to check-in to our stay at Sonnenalp Hotel in Vail.
Sonnenalp Resort of Vail is a world class resort that boasts an unrivaled luxurious experience right in the heart of Vail village. The influence is distinctly German and has all the authenticity and hospitality of a true Bavarian lodge.
Our suite had everything you could imagine and was just beautiful to behold. Our suite was well-appointed with handcrafted Bavarian furniture that really gave the space a lot of character. There was incredible climate control in the room and we were always comfortably warm despite the cold weather outside. Ultra-comfortable plush beds with plenty of space and height. I also have to give a shout-out to the very strong Wi-Fi signal in our room and the entire property.
This was truly a dream bathroom with beautiful heated marble floors.
We really enjoyed using their snug and soft robes located in the roomy walk-in closet. The robes go so well with the spacious and luxurious bathroom includes a hot tub to have a relaxing soak. There are also dual sinks and vanities.
I enjoyed the gas log fireplace because it added a comfortable tranquility to the suite.
Taking everything into consideration, our suite just felt like home. Because you’ll likely want to spend a lot of time in your suite, turn down service was a welcome surprise to spruce up the room. It included their sleek glass bottled water and the hotel’s delicious warm peanut butter cookies.
The next morning we really got good use out of the Nespresso machine and all the assorted cups and silverware were really useful to take a cup of coffee out onto balcony. Look at this display!
I really loved their beautiful full-service European spa and could have easily spent my entire day there.
There’s a fireplace where everyone can just lay out and relax with their drinks. There’s even an oxygen bar if you are feeling the altitude.
The pool area is so awesome and connects both indoor and outdoor with jacuzzis at each end.
As far as hotel gyms go, Sonnenalp has a really impressive one with various free weights, ample space, and a squat rack! That is certainly something you don’t see everyday.
After working up a sweat, you can cool down in their cold bath which will instantly relieve all those swollen areas. Take time in their sauna and steam rooms as well to warm up after the chilly dip and then have at it with their full amenities to make sure you’re looking clean and sharp for your turn on the slopes.

The on-site restaurants are so convenient and we definitely enjoyed our dinner at the Bully Ranch. Despite the size of the resort, the staff always make it feel like you’re the most important person of all. The Concierge was particularly notable and was at all times completely knowledgeable about all of Vail. Whoever was present there bent over backwards to make sure we had all our questions answered and knew exactly where to go. One of the best things about Sonnenalp is the great location which is nearby nearly everything. I can’t say enough good things about the Front desk staff who meet your every need and just genuinely care that you have the most amazing stay. They always go the extra mile and include nice detailed touches such as providing your entire party with water bottles totally unprompted.
The next day we continued to do another quick scenic stop to Piney Lake, thanks to the concierge recommendations.
After a very bumpy 45 minutes of off roading and a short walk towards the lake, you are greeted with this amazing view.
Definitely a highlight on the trip to see such calm waters with this view!
Thank you Vail and Sonnenalp for a wonderful weekend getaway!
