Tour around Santorini
When you have a short amount of time in Santorini Greece, there’s nothing better than to do a day tour around the island. We booked a half-day tour with Santorini Private Day Tours with Kostas and decided to pay a visit to the Akrotiri, red sand beach, and many scenic stops along the way.
Kostas met with us on time and picked us up in his Mercedes van. He even let us sit in the front with him for better scenic views while driving down the coast. First place we stopped at was the Thira Crown which offers some of the best views of the island. Kostas gave us historical information on the volcanic activity that has shaped the island and where you gain a true appreciation for the island as it stands now.
Plus, this is where we learned that Kostas is a pro at taking photographs. He knows his way around the cameras and he takes exceptional photos! He’ll get you at the right angles and lighting. I love the blue domes!
We drove by a lot of wineries, they grow their wine like a nest on the ground.
Next stop was the famous and historical Akrotiri where you actually get to see the actual archeological site where the excavation takes place. It is only 5 euros to enter and is quite an amazing sight to see.
Visiting a sight like this requires some guidance to the history and Kostas uses an iPad to provide images that tied past to present and gave you an idea of the grand scale Akrotiri was before it fell to ruins. Kostas is very informative and went through three years of certification and training to become a certified tour guide.
Anna’s Farm Stands
One additional stop Kostas took us to was Anna’s Farm Stand. He knows I am a foodie and it was the perfect stop for some delicious samples! It was on the way of us touring the outer shores of the island and it was a welcome visit because Anna was featured on the Food Network as one of Giada De Laurentiis’s favorite places in Santorini.
We received a sample of different wines, delicious homemade jams and tomato pastes, and the best sun-dried tomatoes!
Such a relaxing and delicious visit!
All of Anna’s products are home-made, delicious, and unique. Great place to stock up on gifts. Plus Anna is just an absolute sweet lady and this is a must-visit in my opinion.
We continued our journey around the rest of the island with more incredible scenic views.
Kostas doesn’t just stop there, he’ll take you to the highest points of the island back down and you’ll pass through major destinations such as Fira and Thira City and all the while Kostas will fill you in on the island’s best spots and culture. Kostas really goes above and beyond what he has to and leaves no stone unturned. It is amazing how much he can show you in just a half-day tour!
Red Sand Beach
The red sand beach is a beautiful with the blue turquoise water washing against the red sand and rocks. However, it is dangerous to go down there as there are a lot of falling rocks!
Last stop was at Ammoudi Bay, a small charming harbor with crystal clear water where we got to enjoy fresh seafood by the sea.
Kostas is very personable and engaging and when you first meet him he greets you like a true friend who is excited to show you around the Greek Isles. He truly wants you to have the best and most authentic experience of the island and so he is willing to mold the tour to meet your specific interests. He has an encyclopedic amount of knowledge not only about the island but about Greek history, pop culture, etc. As a native he is privy to a lot of information you couldn’t get from people who only do the tour business but live in the cities such as Athens. Instead, Kostas seemingly knows every person on the island and they know him as well. Kostas is also a fine driver so he was able to swiftly take us to various sights. If you want to take a longer time to take pictures, Kostas can do that or if you want to go to the next destination he is more than happy to have the Mercedes Van ready to go.
